When I was young, I like to decorate my room. I would move my furniture every week; try to arrange them on different ways. Sometimes I even moved the furniture in the living room when everyone has slept. On the next morning, my father had to put them on the original place, and I always asked him to put them on my way. So from that time, I was interesting at the elements of space. During the holiday, my father took me to visit monuments in our country. Because my country had been controlled by Spain, Dutch and Japanese, there are lots of different kinds of buildings in Taiwan. They combined with diverse elements and characteristics. Otherwise, there are also a lot of traditional Chinese buildings, so I can observe and visit these architectures from different cultures and styles. When I in a traditional Chinese temple, I account the words in the poetry of the wall to practice my mathematics. I found different shapes used in the space such as a triangular prism, a cube room and a circle window to comprehend geometry. I can also learn the history of my country, because these monuments took important roles in the period our country’s developing. They were used such as an administrative organization, a factory, a train station etc. These learning experiences let me be familiar with architecture and want to be an architect to design my own building.
One day during my studying in university, I was shocked by a picture. It is Falling water, a building designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. He built the house on the water fall, and let the building integrated into the nature. When a season goes by, the scene and even the sound of water flowing would change. It let me know the architecture should combine with the environment and should really consider the function about people’s using in this building. So I take Wright as my exemplary person of architecture and hope I can be an architect like him.
Otherwise, I like historic buildings. The atmosphere and wisdoms of ancient people usually let me have different experiences. I have traveled in Beijing and Kyoto. They are both the traditional cities of eastern countries. In a cold morning with snow drifting, I saw an old person in Beijing took the mop with water to practice the calligraphy in the plaza of the Temple of Heaven. Frigid weather let ancient poetry freeze on the tiles. It seemed to make a dialogue with the historical site. I was moved by this scene. Otherwise, during the trip of Kyoto, I saw people devoted themselves to preserve their traditional culture. They make their outward appearance of the residents consistent with the old monuments. Walking on the gravel road of Japanese temple let me have a tranquil moment and peaceful mind. These two places, people both find their ways to live in the historic cities. Furthermore, let me comprehend the connection between the new with the old, the artifact with the nature, and the history with culture.
Although the architecture design works in Taiwan are not newest on the world, I still learn lots of things from schools and the environment of my country. I consider that an architect should think and care about all the factors. We have to find out the problems or the characteristics of the site. Furthermore, our design has to respond to the environment. Not only makes a beautiful building, but also considers how people use the spaces. Moreover, to create our own style then uses it to be the concept of the design work. I desire to become an architect and I will keep developing my knowledge and ability.
